Ambient Air Pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa: An

چکیده
An important aspect of the new sustainable development goals (SDGs) is a greater emphasis on 9 reducing the health impacts of urban ambient air pollution (AAP) in developing countries. Meanwhile, 10 the burden of disease attributable to AAP in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is growing, yet estimates of its 11 impact in the region are likely underestimated due to a lack of air quality monitoring, the paucity of 12 epidemiological studies, and important population vulnerabilities in the region. The lack of studies in the 13 SSA region also represents an important global health disparity and environmental justice issue because 14 thousands of air pollution health effects studies have been conducted in Europe and North America rather 15 than in some of the most polluted regions of the world, such as SSA. In this review, we synthesize all of 16 the ambient air pollution epidemiological studies that have been conducted in SSA to date. We highlight 17 the gaps in AAP epidemiological studies conducted in different sub-regions of SSA and provide 18 methodological recommendations for future environmental epidemiology studies addressing AAP in the 19 SSA region. 20

A Narrative Review on the Human Health Effects of Ambient Air Pollution in Sub-Saharan Africa: An Urgent Need for Health Effects Studies
An important aspect of the new sustainable development goals (SDGs) is a greater emphasis on reducing the health impacts from ambient air pollution in developing countries. Meanwhile, the burden of human disease attributable to ambient air pollution in sub-Saharan Africa is growing, yet estimates of its impact on the region are possibly underestimated due to a lack of air quality monitoring, a ...
متن کاملEnvironmental Modeling and Methods for Estimation of the Global Health Impacts of Air Pollution
Air pollution is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to global health outcomes. A methodological framework for evaluating the global health-related outcomes of outdoor and indoor (household) air pollution is presented and validated for the year 2005. Ambient concentrations of PM2.5 are estimated with a combination of energy and atmospheric models, with detailed representation o...
متن کاملIs the Role of Physicians Really Evolving Due to Non-physician Clinicians Predominance in Staff Makeup in Sub-Saharan African Health Systems?; Comment on “Non-physician Clinicians in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Evolving Role of Physicians”
Health workforce shortages in Sub-Saharan Africa are widely recognized, particularly of physicians, leading the training and deployment of Non-physician clinicians (NPCs). The paper by Eyal et al provides interesting and legitimate viewpoints on evolving role of physicians in context of decisive increase of NPCss in Sub-Saharan Africa. Certainly, in short or mid-term, NPCs will continue to be a...
متن کاملTransport and Environment in Sub-Saharan Africa
Introduction Modern transport is an essential ingredient for development, allowing the movement of labour, supplies and goods, and enabling citizens to access key resources and services. Yet in sub-Saharan Africa, transport is also problematic in many ways, especially in cities. Vehicle emissions are a major source of air pollution; traffic congestion is severe; road-crash deaths and injuries a...
متن کاملStudy protocol: the effects of air pollution exposure and chronic respiratory disease on pneumonia risk in urban Malawian adults - the Acute Infection of the Respiratory Tract Study (The AIR Study)
BACKGROUND Pneumonia is the 2nd leading cause of years of life lost worldwide and is a common cause of adult admissions to hospital in sub-Saharan Africa. Risk factors for adult pneumonia are well characterised in developed countries, but are less well described in sub-Saharan Africa where HIV is a major contributing factor. Exposure to indoor and outdoor air pollution is high, and tobacco smok...
